September 2011 Round 7 FEKC Club Championship
Rain, rain and yet more rain greeted over 150 competitors for September’s meeting, come lunchtime, after a Red Arrows fly by the sun had appeared and left the third heats and finals with drivers switching to slicks, dry set ups and dispensing with the cumbersome non flattering wet suits!
The Comers were the first final to take to a now bone dry track, Max Bird on pole seemed to oil up on the second warm up lap leaving the youngster unable to take the start, which played straight into Matteo Zanetti’s hands to lead away from Tom Knill into Haynes Loop who came up from fifth on the first lap. Four laps gone and Zanetti was joined by Samuel Dobbs, Harry Ward and Harry Mailer with little to choose between the youngsters, into lap seven Mailer seized the lead from Zanetti and Ward’s race came to an end leaving, last lap into Midgetts Zanetti regained the lead and with the last corner Dobbs got the better run to move past Mailer who was pipped also by Ellis Richardson.
In Honda polesitter Yukinora Ishii fell behind Kiern Jewiss on the first lap and for the remaining 9 laps nothing could separate those two from Eliott Harvey and Samuel Pooley, moving into the fifth lap Pooley edged ahead of Ishii and Jewiss to move into the lead. Harvey up from 8th was by the fourth lap right into the mix and looked to head to second at Johnnys, however the outside line did not work and found himself back in fourth. Meantime on the penultimate lap Jewiss retook the lead from Pooley with a bold move, and eked a breathing space for the last half lap, into Tollys and there was nothing to separate Pooley from Harvey with the computer handing second to Pooley, leaving Harvey with the final step on the podium with Ishii less than a kart length behind to show what close action and racing continues in Honda.
Rotax saw poleman Michael Cheek displaced early on by Craig Mooney who was to continue to the flag unchallenged to put a strangle hold on the championship, Cheek had enough in hand to control his second place from Jake Sturt who continues to increase lap times to keep the pressure on the pack around him. Jon Burch saw a lonely race in fourth with a few seconds gap either way in front and behindJ
Junior TKM had the top four finish in their starting positions with Rob Sedden holding off Adam Worley a kart length from third placed man Tom Hackett who secured fastest lap for himself mid race.
In Gearbox third placed man Kenton Ashforth, for the final got his tyre choice right unlike in the heats and drove to the cheuered flag frm Rob Randall with James Berio taking first in the 125 class.
Combined 177/Masters saw nearly thirty drivers, Mark Redding atop of the grid, 6th lap another Master, Joe Holloway moved to the lead and displaced Graham Mackie down a position, Paul Warrener followed Holloway through and with Redding and Holloway swapping places allowed Warrener to get onto the back of the two Masters. Two laps to go had Holloway regain the lead, heading into the last lap Warrener looked to be setting up Redding for a move, but being the first 177on track he backed out to settle for the points after a great drive coming from ninth. Graham Mackie secured third Master and fourth on track from Dan Watson.
The top three in Minimax finished as they started with poleman Jordan Gilbertson heading Myles Potter and Jordan Richards at the finish line.
A great turnout in Junior Max had Elliot Hall on pole, Ian Bolland alongside, second row Liam Pang and Ben Cheeseman. Hall took a great lead into the first lap, seventh placed David Wright up to fourth at the end of lap one with the man on the move Tom Darcy starting in P18 looking ominous. Mid race Ian Bolland went wide at Midgets allowing Wright through and into second behind Hall, Darcy now into fifth edging past Cheeseman, laps ticked away that left Hall first, Wright second, followed by Bolland, Pang and Darcy to produce a great race.
A great finish to the day in terms of weather and on track action proves to be a thrilling climax to the championships heading into the Autumn months.
